Polytechnics in Finland aim at training the professionals in reply to the labour market needs. The first Polytechnics in Finland started in trial basis in the year 1991-1992 and in the year 1996 the first permanent polytechnics came up. The polytechnics are basically institutions covering a multi field region which focuses on the regional development and the contacts with the working life. The Polytechnics in Finland are administered by the Division for Higher Education and Science under the Ministry of Education.
In the sector of Ministry of Education there are 28 polytechnics. Out of the 28, seven are run by the local authorities, ten by the private organizations, and eleven by the municipal education consortia. In Finland, University of Applied Sciences and Polytechnic and Institute of Technology are names of the same institute. The Finnish Virtual Polytechnic forms the association of all the polytechnics in Finland.
Helsinki Business Polytechnic is Finland’s largest business polytechnic. It is an open polytechnic which is owned by a foundation being run by the Helsinki Business life. This polytechnic is now renamed as Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences.
Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia is a multi disciplinary institute and also is one of the most attractive centres for studying polytechnics in Finland. Helsinki Polytechnic was established in the year 1996. There are around 9500 full time students and more than 32 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs are available here.
There are other institutions too offering polytechnics program. Among these few can be named such as Swedish Polytechnic, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences and many more to add up the list.
