Finland Foreign Relations

Finland foreign relations are interlinked with the guidelines followed by European countries that are within the European Economic Community or the EEC.

Finland foreign relations follow the common thread of the European Union or EU. The thread extends from the customs union to military matters. The foreign relations of Finland portray a marked participation in multilateral activities. The country of Finland is a member of the United Nations as well as the European Union. Finland is also a key member of the North American Treaty Organization or NATO. The Nordic country is also a signatory of the Schengen Treaty. The Schengen Treaty has led to the end of passport controls among European member states and started a common visa program for foreigners entering the continent of Europe from outside the Eurozone.

Finnish foreign relations also exhibit a tilt towards its Nordic neighbors. Finland is an active member of the Nordic council. The Nordic countries share a common labor market and have abolished immigration procedures within their common border areas. Finland is a participant in many economic organizations and bodies like the International Monetary Fund or IMF, the World Trade Organization or WTO, the International Development Association, Asian Development Bank and the Council of Europe.
