Pacific Islands




Pacific Islands make up only a small part of the Pacific Ocean, one quarter of one percent of the total area covered by the whole ocean. The number of the Pacific islands is however large. The total number being approximately more than 30,000.

Pacific islands are collectively called Oceania and constitutes of both larger inhabited islands and smaller ones without any human settlement. The Oceania group is divided into three parts- Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

The larger of the Pacific islands were formed due to the volcanic activity on the ocean floor. The molten rock emitted during volcanic eruption solidified into islands. Many of the Pacific Islands have dormant volcanoes. The mountainous landscape is dotted by beautiful beaches. The islands of Fiji, Hawaii, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tuvalu, etc.

The comparatively smaller Pacific islands are mostly formed of coral reefs. They are not inhabited. These Pacific islands provide the scope of viewing the varied and colorful marine life that abounds in and around the coral reefs.

Pacific islands like those in the Fiji archipelago or the Hawaiian islands are famous for the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, the colorful culture and the friendliness and warmth of the people. Tourism and hospitality industry has developed in these Pacific islands due to the increasing attention of the tourists to this paradise on earth.

Apart from sightseeing, other popular tourist activities include trips and swims to explore the beauties of the Pacific islands. Water sports and activities are much favored by tourists.
