Political Parties of Estonia

Estonia is a democratic country with multi party system. There are a number of political parties of Estonia. The party with maximum number of votes forms the government. It is usually noticed in Estonia that no singular party gets absolute majority and the political parties in Estonia usually form coalition government. The major political parties of Estonia are:
  • Estonian Centre Party
  • Estonian Reform Party
  • Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica
  • Estonian Greens
  • People's Union of Estonia
Estonian Centre Party is the centrist and social liberal party. This party is now the largest opposition party and the second largest party in Parliament. Estonian Reform Party is a member of European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party.
The leader of the party is Andrus Ansip. Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica was formed in the year of 2006 by merging two conservative parties. Estonian Greens is a small party of Estonia and their main aim is to protect the natural resources of the country. Estonia People's Union is a rural and agrarian party with populist tendencies. People's Union of Estonia was formed on 29th September, 1994 in Tallinn.

In the year 2007 legislative elections, the number of seats gained by the different Estonia political parties were:

  • Estonian Reform Party - 31
  • Estonian Centre Party - 29
  • Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica - 19
  • Social Democratic Party - 10
  • Estonian Greens - 6
  • People's Union of Estonia - 6
The Government coalition consists of Estonian Reform Party, Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica and Estonian Social Democratic Party.
