People's Union of Estonia came into existence on 29th September, 1994 in Tallinn. The former name of the party was Estonian County People's Party. On 18th October 1999 the party was renamed to
People's Union of Estonia. In the year 2000 the party became the largest party by merging with
- Estonian Country Union
- Estonian party of Pensioners and families

Estonia People's Union is a rural and agrarian party with populist tendencies. The party faced difficulty in making a strong foot hold in the towns and the cities. The first chairman of the party was Arnold Ruutel, who once was a president of Estonia. In the year 2000 Villu Reiljan became new chairman of the party.
The party was the member of the government by forming coalitions in the year 1995-1999 and in the year 2003-2007.
In 2003 they were in coalition with the parties like Estonian Reform Party and the Union for the Republic-Res Publica and formed the government.
The number of seats that the parties reserved in different legislative elections:
- 2003 - 13 votes
- 2005- 16seats
- 2007 - 6seats

As the party failed to achieve good results in the last election, People's Union Party of Estonia was not reappointed to coalition government.
