Estonia is the democratic republic with the main power lying in the hands of Estonia legislature.
Estonia legislature is the single chambered parliament, which is elected by the people. In Estonia, the legislature is called by the name of Riigikogu. The legislature in Estonia is elected by the adult citizens of Estonia. About 101 members of the legislature of Estonia are elected through territorial representation. These members are chosen for a term of 4 years.
The duties of Riigikogu include the following:
- Riigikogu appoints Prime Minister - head of the cabinet and government of Estonia
- Riigikogu appoints the cabinet. The cabinet looks after the country’s domestic and foreign policy
- Estonia Legislature elects president
- Riigikogu also appoints Chief Justice of Supreme Court
- It also ratifies several significant foreign treaties, military and propriety obligations
- Bring changes in law
- Approves budget
- Controls and monitors executive power
The first elections to Riigikogu took place after the independence in Estonia in about 1920s. The Riigikogu remained disbanded for the following periods:
- 1940-1941
- 1941-44
- 1944-1991
The present Riigikogu was established in the year of 2007.
