Estonia under Russia

The history of Estonia under Russia dates back to the period of the 17th century. The operation of Estonia under Russia began when the rule of Russia was imposed over Estonia after the Treaty of Nystad. Russia overtaking Estonia occurred but there were few areas, which were exempted out of their control till the late 19th century.

In the nineteenth century there was the development of the national movement of Estonia which resulted in the establishment of the language, music, literature and cultural development of Estonia. It is known as the Estonian Age of Awakening. The relation between Estonian people and the Russians turned hostile when the attempt of imposing the Russian language was made in the period of 1880s to 1990s. But, before that, the view of Estonia for the regal Russia was positive.

The nationalism of Estonia took an upper hand with supplementary political nature when Russification in Estonia was introduced and the step also motivated the move
for absolute independence from Russia in the later phase of the Estonian history. The Estonian Declaration of Independence was issued on 24th February in 1918 at Parnu. Estonia was successful in maintaining its independence for a period of 22 years after winning the Estonian War of Independence.
