Estonia flag is a tricolor flag which has three horizontal bands. The topmost band is blue in color middle one is black and the bottom most is white in color. The standard size of the
Estonia flag is 105x165cm.
The flag first came into being in the year 1880 as the flag of Estonian Students society at the university of Tartu and was adopted on 4th June 1884 in the hall of pastorate of Oteppa. The flag was banned following the Soviet Union invasion in 1940. The flag was again adopted on 21st November 1918 after the independence. The flag lost its status as national flag during 1940-44 and during the second half of twentieth century. The flag however regained its status as the national flag of Estonia in the year 1990.
The colors of the national flag of Estonia represent the rich folk culture of Estonia and also some elements of nature.
The individual colors represent:
- Blue - color of faith, loyalty and devotion and the qualities of water bodies
- Black - dark past of the suffering and plight of Estonia people
- White - striving towards enlightenment and virtue and also represent birch bark, snow happiness and light
