The love and passion for Estonian theatres began in the mid 19th century. The building of the first Estonian theatre was built by financial aid from the national fund-raising campaigns. The Estonia theatre is located in Tallinn. The brainchild behind the architecture of the building is Armas Lindgren ja Wivi Lonn.
The theatre of Estonia was made open to the general people on 24th August. It happened to be the largest building of the city of Tallinn during that time. But the theatre at Estonia suffered a great setback during the Soviet air raid in 1944. However, various renovation works were done and the theatre was again re-opened in 1947. There are two divisions in the building namely the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian National Opera. In the year 2006, an additional chamber hall was opened.
It was during the Soviet regime that people could express their views towards the government only by performing on the stage. The western ideas of the theatre influenced the young producers like Peter Brook, Bertold Brecht and Antonin Artaud. The dramatic art has been made popular by the summer productions by various theatres. The theatres are well visited by the people of Estonia.
