The Synagogue of Asmara is now an abandoned place, if judged in terms of the number of worshipers who turn up. In fact the Eritrea Jewish community that once inhabited Asmara and certain other parts of Eritrea are now completely uprooted. The religious freedom in Eritrea is restricted and only four faiths are accepted. The major tourist interests in Asmara are hence the Mosques and the churches of the accepted sects. The Synagogue of Asmara however, is one of its kinds. This edifice and the adjoining complex are looked after by Samuel Cohen, an Asmara resident. The Synagogue of Asmara consists of the main worshiping space, a classroom for preaching religious texts and a burial ground for the last rites of the Jews in Asmara.
Asmara is the capital city of the country of Eritrea. Though it was a disturbed region some few years ago, the uproar has been settling fast and the tourism industry is earning handsome revenue. There are ample tourist attractions in Asmara of which, the Synagogue of Asmara is one. The transportation in Asmara is comfortably developed. While bus services are the cheapest modes of conveyance within the city, tourists can easily hire cars for covering many places in a short span of time.
