Barentu is a town that is located in southwestern part of Eritrea and is on the south of Agordat. It is considered to be the main town where the Kunama people reside. It is basically situated in the Gash-Barka Zone of Eritrea.
Since a long time, this Eritrean city of Barentu has been playing the role of a major agricultural and mining hub of the country. However, during the Eritrean-Ethiopian battle the town underwent significant damage and has been reconstructed.
This territory of Barentu is the homeland of several nomadic tribes. It is in fact the centre of Kunama region and the Kunama people are thought to be among the first inhabitants of Eritrea.
Being a remarkable market town of Eritrea Barentu draws many people from the nearby locations. While taking a trip around this market place one can enjoy the flavor of mixed tribal cultures.
Barentu is indeed the perfect place for the shoppers. The most-preferred times to visit this place are Tuesdays and Saturdays. Generally in those days most of the Kunama people come here to visit the market square.
The places that are located close to this Eritrean town are Mai turab, Teghere and Safira. Now-a-days the tourism industry is also developing in this city.
