Sports venues in Eritrea are mostly football grounds. Though there are many upcoming football fields the two most important football grounds in Eritrea are Cicero Stadium and the Denden Stadium. Football is very popular among the locals ever since the introduction of this game by the Italians in 1930s. The Military football team of Eritrea has also proved its efficiency in the game to the international audience.
The First Goal project is a project is an attempt to modernize and improve the Denden stadium and the Cicero stadium. The pitch at Denden Stadium has gone under renovation and improvement as per the decision of the First Goal project. This project in collaboration with the FIFA financial support sponsored the renovation charges. Once completed, the Denden Stadium is expected to be used for both national level and international level football matches.
The Cicero renovations and additions are fully supported by the First Goal project. The final version would enable more number of young Eritreans to brush up their talents.
In addition to the Cicero stadium and the Denden stadium, there is a third major stadium in Asmara, the September First Stadium. This is located in the Liberation Avenue. Rather than football matches, this stadium is used for the purpose of marching practices in chief. The sports venues in Eritrea are very popular hangouts of the general public, who take a keen interest in sports.
