Eritrean Festivals



Eritrea festivals are characterized with colorful celebrations, local customs and various cultural activities. Generally the festivals in Eritrea are celebrated during the summer season. The most important festival in Eritrea is called Expo. In Eritrea, this festival is celebrated annually.

The festivals celebrated by the people of the country are reflective of the society and culture of Eritrea. These festivals also reflect the diversity in the life of the people of the country. Some of the festivals in Eritrea are related to the liberation movement of the country.

The Bologna Festival, at one point had inspired nationalistic feeling among the young generation of the country and many people had participated in the freedom struggle. From the year 1992 onwards Expo has become a joyous occasion for all Eritrean people. It is also an occasion when families unite in Eritrea. This festival of Eritrea is considered to be the national festival of the country.

In Expo, creativity is highly encouraged. Youths from different parts of the country come to exhibit their creative and artistic pursuits. Cultural programs, dances and songs are performed by the local people during Eritrea festivals. There are many other youth fairs and regional festivals that are celebrated in Eritrea.
