Eritrea Coffee Ceremony is an integral part of the Eritrean culture. This is in fact inseparably linked with the lives of Eritreans. Since coffee is considered to be a highly preferred drink in Eritrea, a cup of coffee is enough for celebrating an event.
The residents of Eritrea treat coffee as a delicacy and to get an offer of invitation to a coffee ceremony is considered as a very special honor in the country. Most of the time, women perform the Eritrean coffee ceremony.
A particular procedure is adopted while preparing this popular drink. Firstly, the green coffee beans are washed and then it gets roasted in a small pot popularly known as "menkesh". Finally, when the beans become roasted the guests get the opportunity to enjoy the aroma. This coffee making way is quite easy and any one can try it in home if, he/she is interested to enjoy the flavor of Eritrean coffee.
Thereafter the freshly beans roast are crushed and poured in a "mishrafat" and are mixed with water in a pot (jebena). After this it is placed on a charcoal stove and being heated. Now it is ready for serve.
The hosts pour coffee in small cups and add with sugar. Popcorn often accompanies it. Basically around an hour is needed to complete the entire ceremony. All the guests maintain certain decorum during this ceremony time and never leave earlier.
It is also true that in Eritrea, people who appreciate the aroma smells and drink three cups of coffee are invited to join the Eritrea Coffee Ceremony again.
