Eritrea Churches and Mosques



Eritrea churches and mosques are frequently visited by the followers of the respective religions of the country. The society and culture of Eritrea could be understood from the churches and mosques built in the country. The people of Eritrea follow religions of Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Coptic Christianity and Islam.

Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque is located on the Peace Street in Asmara. This mosque in Eritrea was constructed in 1938. The beauty of the mosque is enhanced by Carrara marble and Dekemhare travertine. Blocks of dark stone are arranged in different patterns to add to the architectural splendor of the mosque. Mar Bin Abdulaziz Mosque is another religious center of the Muslims in Eritrea.

The Cathedral in Asmara is a famous church in Eritrea. The bell tower built in the Gothic style is very fascinating. The melodious sound of the bell can be heard from a distance. A magnificent view of the city can be viewed by climbing the tower. This tower is 52 meter high.

Nda Mariam Coptic Cathedral was erected to honor St. Mary. This cathedral is one of the landmarks in Asmara. The serene and calm ambiance of the cathedral can only be felt on entering the churchyard. Eritrea churches and mosques are reflective of the cultural unity of the people of the country.
