Eritrea Human Rights

Eritrea human rights is a major national issue and has been in news ever since the Independence of the Eritrea from the Ethiopia, which had been controlling Eritrea ever since the end of colonial rule. In spite of the long drawn war that led to the Eritrean independence, Ethiopia remains one of the worst enemies of Eritrea. Thousands of soldiers are killed in the conflict and many villages in the border region have been abandoned because of the ensuing uncertainty in the region.

Eritrea's is a single party government, the People's Front For Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), headed by the Isaias Afwerki. Afwerki is the president of Ethiopia and has been heading the government since 1993. No election, presidential or otherwise, has been held ever since, nor has the borderline with Ethiopia officially finalized. These are the root causes of all conflicts and violence in the region that have given Ethiopia an opportunity to rise in argument over the border. Even in 1998, war broke out between Ethiopia and Eritrea on the same grounds.

Violence In Eritrea

The constitution of Eritrea makes it mandatory for one and all physically and mentally sound citizens to obtain military training so as serve the country in case war breaks out. In the attempt to avoid this stringent regulation, many of Eritrea's citizens have faced fatal consequences from the army. Many have been jailed and tortured without enough reasons and any attempt to criticize the government has been answered with bloodshed. Kidnappings and murder over political disputes is pretty common. Even independent journalists and senior officers have not been spared in this context.

Arbitrary arrests, exploitation of workers, restriction on the freedom of expression and organization, murders on basis of intolerance of religions and religious sects are the common issues of violation of Eritrea human rights.
