The Ethiopia Eritrea War has been an ongoing issue, which has for long been affecting the condition of the two countries as well as that of the horn of Africa. Eritrea, which was formerly a state of Ethiopia, began its struggle for an individual land and identity in the early sixties. The land of Eritrea has historical importance dating back to some several centuries. After the cessation of British troupes and colonial rule from Eritrea, Eritrea was divided among the countries of Sudan and Ethiopia. Though research was conducted by United Nations to figure out the desire of majority of Eritreans, the final decision was taken in the interest of the powerful western nations, especially the United States of America.
After a rather long period of violence, bloodshed and war in Eritrea, the country gained its freedom from Ethiopian rule in 1993. However, the post-independence was not peaceful. There were several loopholes regarding the authentication of the accepted border line of Eritrea and the this was the prime reason of dispute and the outbreak of the second conflict in the year 1998. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea are economically backward countries, that needs to do much for proving their citizens with the basic amenities of life such as food, clothing and medical aid. Yet both countries have been spending millions of dollars on war. The war itself has claimed more than 40 thousand soldiers in the border area alone. Some 300 thousand troops and several warplanes have been employed. The villages in the bordering regions have been abandoned for years and yet, soldiers continue to fight over issues, created by political interest of a handful. Though the Organization of African Unity has been doing much to bring an end to the war, bloodshed and economic decline continues hand in hand.
