Exploring Eritrea wildlife amidst the rich flora and fauna is a very adventurous experience. Eritrea Wildlife includes various species of birds and animals that are available in the hilly plains and forests of Eritrea.
Animals and Birds in Eritrea
Different species of animals like monkeys, cheetahs, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, hippos and many other animals were found in the forests of Eritrea. However, some of these animals have become extinct due to the adverse effects of war. The commonly noticed mammals are Abyssinian hare, wildcat, black jackal, ground squirrel and pale fox. Amongst the others, there are the black cat, Oryx, crocodiles, kudus and klipspringers.
There are about 537 species of birds in Eritrea. In the Dahlak Islands, a wide range of sea birds can be found in the Red Sea region, such as the gulls, boobies, tern frolic and so on. The most sighted ones are the Osprey and the Arabian Bustard. During the winter, a wide range of birds migrates to the country, crossing Arabia and Africa. Birds like the Narina tragon and the white-cheeked turaco are abundant especially in the lush green forests scattered in the Semenawi Bahri region.
Marine animals in Eritrea
The Marine ecosystems comprise of the seabeds, coral reefs, and the evergreen mangrove forests. The four species of Dolphins namely the humpback, spinner dolphins, the common and the bottelnose are found in abundance around the Dahlak Isalnds. Found along the coastline are species of Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Avicennia marina as well as the five species of turtle. The different kinds of sharks include mako, whale, tiger sharks and hammerhead.
