Eritrea Flora and Fauna


Eritrea flora and fauna include not only the various species of animals and birds scattered in the deep forests of Africa, but also the different varieties of plants growing in the country. Eritrea Flora and Fauna comprise of the different kinds of mammals that have been rated in the categories of Endangered, Critically Endangered and Vulnerable animals in Eritrea.

The Wild Dog and the African Wild Ass are termed as Endangered and Critically Endangered animals respectively, while the vulnerable category includes Cheetah, Lion, African Elephant, Red Fronted Gazelle, Sperm Whale and Lesser Horseshoe Bat.

Eritrean Flora

The flora, in the lower part of Eritrea, is different from the tropical African flora. It has been observed that vegetation is plenty in the central plateau of the country. Trees that can be found in this region include olive tree, the sycamore fig tree, dura, bultuc and maize.

Animals and Birds in Eritrea

Eritrea was the home of different species of animals such as buffaloes, monkeys, cheetahs, elephants, hippos, giraffes and many more in the past years. However, these animals have disappeared gradually from the country. The commonly noticed mammals are Abyssinian hare, black jackal, wildcat, ground squirrel and pale fox. Amongst the others are the black cat, Oryx, kudus, crocodiles and klipspringers. There are 537 species of birds including the blue saw wing, osprey and Arabian Bustard.

Marine life in Eritrea

The Marine ecosystems comprise of the seabeds, coral reefs, and the evergreen mangrove forests. In the red sea, various kinds of coral exist. Found along the coastline are species of Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Avicennia marina as well as the five species of turtle. Dolphins are in abundance around the Dahlak Isalnds.
