Trade unions of Eritrea have formed since 1952. The first trade union of Eritrea was formed by the United Eritrean Workers for Independence. The birth of this trade union coincided with the year when Eritrea came under the rule of the Ethiopian government. But this union soon ceased to exist.
But in the later years, members of this trade union continued to hold meetings secretively and fought for the rights of the workers in the country. The open firing by the army in 1958 has been a historical event of Eritrea. Many workers were shot dead while they gathered for a demonstration. This brutal act legally ended trade unions in Eritrea for the next thirty years.
In 1979, National Union of Eritrean Workers was formed. This organization supported the War of Independence in Eritrea. The members of this organization were successful to motivate workers from different parts of the country. The organization was recognized as a trade union of the country during 1991 to1993. This trade union of Eritrea set up a number of industrial federations under it. This organization grew with a membership of 20,000 in 1994 when it formed National Confederation of Eritrean Workers. The formation of trade unions has influenced the business and economy of Eritrea to a great extent.
