Eritrea Shipping

Eritrea Shipping is among the expanding business ventures in the country. The major shipping companies in Eritrea include Eritrea Shipping Lines and Maritime Shipping Enterprise. The Eritrea Shipping Lines had been in existence even before the acquisition of Eritrea's independence and the company base had to be shifted temporarily to Djibouti. The Eritrea Shipping Lines is actually a government owned company and has been registered officially under the law. Yet the administration of the Eritrea Shipping Lines is semi autonomous.

Way back in 1966, the Eritrea Shipping Line was founded with a fleet of three merchant ships that would carry out all export business to and from Ethiopian Eritrea. With passage of years considerable progress has been made and the company now owns 13 ships, six of them being multi-purpose sister ships, one oil tanker, three "roll-on, roll-off" ships and two general cargo ships. For further improvement in the profit area of the company, ESL is competing in export sector. The Eritrea shipping companies manages a major part of the import business in Eritrea and also serves in the time national emergency.

The office of the Eritrea Shipping Lines is based in Asmara and that of the Maritime Shipping Enterprise in Massawa.
