San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador. San Salvador is situated near a valley, which is known as "El Valle de las Hamacas" (in English 'The valley of the Hammocks'). This capital city has experienced massive earthquakes in the recent past.

According to the Census report of 2006, the total population of this country is 2,224,223 people. About one third of the total population of the country resides in El Salvador.

San Salvador Earthquakes had resulted in massive destruction to the city's property. The volcanic eruption of 1917 resulted in three destructive earthquakes. As a result of this eruption the El Salvador government shifted the capital temporarily to Santa Tecla city, earlier known as Nueva San Salvador. 2001 earthquake was the most recent earthquake that created damage to Las Colinas, a suburb of the city. San Salvador has retained the status of the Capital of El Salvador in spite of all this.
