El Salvador local governments consists of the various divisional heads existing under the central government of El Salvador. The central government has the complete authority to amend some of the local governmental policies. The El Salvador local government acts regionally in the various provinces of the country. They are invested with limited powers with which they try to bring about a change for the better in El Salvador.
FUNCTIONS OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN EL SALVADOR
The country of El Salvador comprises of 14 departments having a governor who is the ruling head of each department. The executive body of the central government in El Salvador elects the members of the local governments of El Salvador. The alternate governors ruling the local governments is elected by them. The country is divided into 262 municipalities and is controlled by municipal councils and city managers. The city managers or mayors as well as municipal council members are elected by the process of popular voting system. But the municipal organizations are answerable to their higher authorities for their actions and implementation of policies within their provinces. The governor limits the powers of the municipal organizations, thus misuse of power by the respective municipalities is avoided.
