El Salvador is one of the smallest countries of Central America. El Salvador earthquakes created great damage to the properties of the country El Salvador has experienced three earthquakes. All earthquakes in El Salvador were very massive. The first earthquake occurred in San Salvador on October 10, 1986. The magnitude recorded in the Richter scale was Ms 5.5. The second earthquake hit the off coast of El Salvador on January 13, 2001. The magnitude of this quake was 7.7. In in the same year another earthquake took place near San Salvador on February 13, 2001. The magnitude of this quake was M 6.6.
El Salvador Earthquake of January 13, 2001
This earthquake devastated the country. On the Richter Scale the magnitude recorded was 7.6 situated at latitude 12 degree 52' North and longitude 88 degree 46' West. The epicenter of this quake was out of Pacific coast of the country, in south Usulutan about 65 km away. The depth was 60 km. The intensity of the earth quake was so high that it was felt from Mexico to Costa Rica.
El Salvador Earthquake of February 13, 2001
In February 13, 2001 another earthquake took place in the country at 8.22 am in the morning, situated in San Pedro Nonualco, southeastern side of San Salvador. Honduras and Guatemala had experienced the tremors of this quake.
Consequences of El Salvador Earthquakes
The earthquake that had occurred earlier created more damages to the properties of the country than the latest ones. The following landslides aggravated the destruction caused by the quakes. The emergency work is carried out by National Emergency Committee( COEN) in El Salvador.
