El Salvador Flag

El Salvador flag has three equal horizontal bands. The three horizontal bands in the flag of El Salvador are blue at the top an bottom with a white band in between. El Salvador country flag carries the court of arms in the middle of the white band. The El Salvador national flag is similar in appearance to those of Nicaragua and Honduras.

The words 'Republica de El Salvador en La America Central' circumscribe the coat of arms displayed at the centre of the white band. The flag was adopted on 27th September 1972 and the coat of arms on 27th December of the same year. The sides of the El Salvador flag are in the ratio of 4:7.

The three equal horizontal bands of blue, white and blue is in remembrance of the United Provinces of Central America which gained independence from Spain in 1823. The coat of arms carries the flags of the five United Provinces. A triangle in the coat of arms signifies equality, and a rainbow represents peace.

El Salvador flag was initially adopted in May 1912, and later modified and readopted in September 1972. The El Salvador government and the El Salvador military use modified patterns of this flag.
