Idfu Edfu

Idfu /Edfu is a wonderful Egyptian town on the banks of River Nile. It was the capital of a predynastic kingdom of Upper Egypt that flourished during 3400 B.C. Idfu /Edfu is specially known for the temple of God Horus. This was
probably a sandstone temple that was set up by Ptolemy III and Ptolemy IV. There is no doubt in the fact that this temple is one of the best examples of temple architecture of Egypt.

The excavations in this town have discovered several remains of the ancient era. A field of mastabas that belongs to the Old Kingdom, a cemetery of Romans and a Byzantine and Coptic remains are some of them. This town of Idfu was also known to the Greek people, who associated Horus with Apollo, as the Apollinopolis Magna.

Precisely, the main purpose of visiting Idfu or Edfu is getting a glance of the long narrow temple of God Horus. Till date, it has retained its beauty and charm.

The temple that is standing now is in fact the replica of the 2000 year-old original pharaonic design. Since the temple is protected and kept under preservation, much of its original color is still in good condition. Tourists can also visit the ruins of El-Kab that lies around 20 km north of this temple.
