El Lahun

El Lahun is an ancient town located between the cities of Fayoum and Beni Suef. It was originally called Ro-hent, which means 'mouth of the canal'. The town is easily accessible by trains and buses from the other major cities of the country.

Situated by the side of Joseph Canal, the town is known for Senwosret II's pyramid. This town also has a mastaba on its western side, which is Chancellor Inpy's resting place. Chancellor Inpy was the designer of Senwosret II's pyramid. Kahun, an ancient town, which was home to the people who built Senwosret II's pyramid, is located nearby.

Generally, police escorts the visitors to the pyramid of El Lahun. While journeying to El Lahun via Medinet El-Faiyum, visitors can see the magnificent embankment built by Amenemhet I on the way. This was built during Dynasty XII to enlarge Lake Moeris.

The pyramid of Senwosret II was built in yellow limestone. The structure of this pyramid is different from other pyramids. The striking difference is that the entrance to the Pyramid is in the eastern side, while in other cases, it is in the northern side. The designer of Senwosret II's pyramid created the entrance in the eastern side and not easily visible to the mass.
