El Alamein is a picturesque town in the northern part of Egypt. It is on Mediterranean Sea coast and is located 106 km west of Alexandria and approximately 240 km northwest of the capital city of Cairo. Like the entire Egyptian north coast, El Alamein is also succumbing to mass tourism with time.
El Alamein played an important role in the outcome of World War II. Two remarkable wars are believed to take place in this area and due to this historical significance, it has become a highly popular tourist destination.
While enjoying a trip around El Alamein, tourists must also visit the local war museum. It has a rich collection of the civil war antiquities and other collectibles from North African wars. This Egyptian town has lot more to offer its tourists. Here, one can visit the German and Italian Military Cemetery on Tel el-Eisa Hill outside the town. The German cemetery is basically a receptacle containing the cadaver of 4200 German battalions that is constructed according to the medieval fortress style. The Italian cemetery, on the other hand, is a burial chamber containing several galleries of tombs.
Besides all these places of major interest, the other alluring attraction of this city is the Commonwealth war cemetery with soldier’s graveyards from different countries that fought for the British.
