The part of the Nile River, which flows through Egypt, is called the White Nile. The White Nile has its origin in Lake Victoria. The white Nile River is responsible for 28% of the total water flow in the river. The rest 58% and 14% are supplied by the Blue Nile and the Atbara River respectively. The delta region, watered by the tributaries is very fertile.
In the ancient times, when no dams were constructed, the delta region would be flooded with water during the rainy seasons. The mineral rich silt that the flood would leave behind, was the key factor behind the flourishing of the civilization. Presently, 99% of the Egyptian population inhabits the part of Egypt occupied by the Nile valley and delta, though the Nile valley and the delta region accounts for only 4% of the total land.
