Had the Nile River not been there, the Entire country of Egypt as well as 11 other countries would have been desert. The Nile valley is the pioneer of the ancient Pharoic kingdoms, as the development of all ancient civilizations was impossible without rivers.
Presently, many an important cities in Egypt and in other countries of Africa are situated on the banks of the river Nile. The Nile valley in Egypt occupies only 4% of the total land area in Egypt. The rest is occupied by the desert and arid regions. Yet the very Nile valley and the delta region are home to 99% of the Egyptians. The rest one percent are the Bedouins who roam the deserts of Eastern Desert, Western Desert and the Sinai Peninsula region.
Life in the Western desert is even harder, except in the oasis regions. There are five of them and most of the nomadic tribes are settled around the oasis. It is among the hottest regions of Egypt. Rainfall is so scanty that it is not unusual for rainfall to happen in this region once in 5 to10 years. The Western desert covers two-third of the total land area of Egypt.
