The
Al-Fayyum University has been named after the Egyptian city in which the university is located and caters to the students of the city of Al-
Fayyum in Egypt. The Al-Fayyum city is located in northern Egypt and serves as the capital of the large Al-Fayyum Governorate. The university has a large student base in northern Egypt. Although, the university is not very old, being established only in 1983 yet, it was decided at its planning stages that the university would be transformed into one of the major universities in northern region of the country of Egypt.
The
Al-Fayyum University was established as a branch university of Egypt's premier university, the Cairo University. Staying true to the heritage of its parent university, it has developed into one of the best secular universities of the country. The Al-Fayyum University had originally been handed the responsibilities of the College of Education, Agriculture and Engineering of Cairo University. However, in the year 2005, the university was granted independent status in accordance to a special decree. The first president of the independent Al-Fayyum University was Professor Galal Mostafa Said, who also took initiative to start the new medicine and archaeology departments in the university.
