Textile industries in Egypt play a crucial role in the economy of the country. The government is engaged in the supervision of craftsmanship and textile export. The modern methods and techniques applied in the manufacturing and production of textiles in Egypt are quite different from those of the ancient times. There is a steady improvement in the quality of materials and use of different types of fabrics.
The use of linen was very common in the making of textiles by the ancient Egyptian people. A number of textile workshops, producing linen, were established in Pharaonic Egypt. Textiles were also made from goat hair, grass, sheep’s wool, reeds and palm fibers. After removing the fiber from the animal’s body, a spindle was used to weave them together. These workshops had a lot of women workers who were engaged in the production unit.
During the Islamic period, Egypt’s textile industry greatly contributed to the economy of Egypt. Large quantities of fabrics were exported to different countries. Byzantine Empire obtained fabrics from cities like Alexandria and Tennis. The government set up factories and more workers were employed to ensure high-class production. The use of wool was next to linen during this period.
