Wadi Natrun is situated in the eastern desert of Egypt near delta. Since a long time, it has been one of the main attractions especially for the Christian tourists to the country of Egypt.
The word Wadi basically stands for valley and the probable reason to call it a valley is that it is a flat land surrounded by 10 lakes. Here, the primary source of water is rainfall during the desert storms. This area has also a wide stock of sodium carbonates and salts, which the Egyptians of ancient age used for mummifying the dead bodies.
The Romans again, drew out silica for making glass. However, during the British rule, a railroad system was introduced to move the salt to the Cairo valley.
The tourists mainly come here for the purpose of bird watching. Wadi Natrun houses a series of nine small lakes, scattered all over the territory.
Gallinago Gallinago, Numenius Arquata, Tadorna Tadorn, Calidris Minuta and Charadrius Alexandrinus are some of the Egyptian winter concentrations located in Wadi El Natrun. However, presently, this holy and sacred place has acquired international fame as a major Christian monastical center.
