Tomb of Irukaptah

The Tomb of Irukaptah belongs to Khenu or Irukaptah, one of the early rulers of Dynasty V. Irukaptah was popularly known as the 'Master Butcher of the Great House, King's Wab-Priest' and his tomb stands at the southern end of the city of Saqqara, beside the Unas causeway. Deriving a moniker after its builder, the Tomb of Irukaptah is also popularly called "Butcher's Tomb". The entrance to the tomb is towards the north and it leads to an inner chamber of 14 large statues standing in front of false doors. On the left of the entrance, there are 2 slabs, which depict some men carrying a bed. The other slab features some men carrying a chest.

The inner crevices reveal more statues named after the family members of Irukaptah, but the architecture of these statues are not to be missed. The statues are directly carved out on the walls of the tomb and this style is not found in any other tomb of Saqqara.

There are other scenes on the wall, which portray Irukaptah himself on a canoe with his family members. False doors occupy the western walls of the Irukaptah tomb, whereas there are other rock-cut statues, which have been left unpainted.
