Tomb of Ankh Mahor

The Tomb of Ankh-mahor is more commonly known as the mastaba of Ankhmahor in the local dialect, since it did not belong to any royal but to
one of the higher-ranking subjects of king Teti. Like the tombs of all other subjects of Teti, the Tomb of Ankh-mahor also occupies the northern part surrounding Teti's pyramid. Ankh-mahor has been referred to as the vizier of the king, who was responsible for overseeing the Great House and occupied a very significant position at the king's court. First excavations of the tomb date back to 1899, when it was dug by Victor Loret. However, recent archaeological studies have revealed that the site is in reality a conglomeration of many chapels and the burial grounds of the vizier and his son.

The main tomb is not very big and consists of only 6 chambers with an entrance towards the east. The Tomb of Ankh-mahor has often been called the 'Physician's Tomb', because it reveals important and mysterious medical practices of ancient Egypt through its wall depictions.

Each chamber is dedicated to depictions of different ways of Egyptian life, ranging from agriculture to craftsmanship and even medicine. The medical scenes have given archaeologists, valuable data regarding the scientific and advanced medicine of ancient Egypt.
