The pyramid of Chephren Khafre belongs to one of the pharaohs of Dynasty IV in ancient Egypt. It is also considered as the second largest pyramid found at Giza. The pyramid covers a diameter of 215.25 meters and rises to a height of 143.5 meters. The position of the pyramid on a raised platform gives it an illusion of being taller than the great pyramid at Giza. The pyramid of Chephren Khafre belongs to King Khepren, the son of Khufu who is also the builder of the great pyramid at Giza.
It is in front of the pyramid of Chephren Khafre that the world famous sphinx, synonymous with ancient Egypt, stands. The sphinx was carved out of limestone that grew as a natural formation out of the ground. The original limestone covering atop the pyramid is still seen towards the apex of the structure, but limestone from other parts of the pyramid has eroded away with time. The main pyramid complex also houses a separate mortuary temple.
Except for the bottom casing, which was covered with pink granite, the rest of the pyramid was encased in Torah limestone. At present, the pyramidion and a little portion of the apex have eroded. In the First Intermediate Period, when it was first introduced to the common public, the pyramid was robbed off great treasures. Theft continued even during the rule of the Dynasty XVIII.
