Al Burdayni Mosque

The origin of the Al Burdayni Mosque in Egypt dates back to the ruling period of the Ottoman Emperor in 1616. However, the style of the
mosque is unique, as it does not conform to the usual Ottoman style. The construction of the Mosque was started by an Egyptian Shaikh of the Shafi's rite in 1616, but was completed much later in 1694 by a rich merchant. This was meant to be a private prayer hall and that is why the mosque premise is very small. The mosque was created under the order of Egyptian Shaikh, Karim al-Burdayni. However, Burdayni was neither a ruling Muslim official, nor a Turkish person. So, the mosque had no Turkish touch in its design. What was special was the revival of the Mamluk style of artwork.

Though very small, this mosque of Egypt is an architectural wonder and a joy to watch for the passionate travelers. The walls of the Al Burdayni Mosque are almost entirely done up with marble panel. There are amazing designs of marble and mosaic combination. The roof is worked upon with gold and this adds to the beauty of the mosque. The beautiful work of the stained glass works adorns the Al Burdayni Mosque.

The Al Burdayni Mosque is located in the Dawudiyya district and is a must-visit spot for both art lovers and Muslims.
