Avenue of Volcanoes

The Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuador refers to the parallel ranges that comprise some of the highest volcano peaks in the world. The entire land of Ecuador and Galapagos island is dotted with several volcanoes many of which are still active. The highest and most attractive among them is mountain Chimborazo which stands towering over other peaks at a height of 6,310m. The mountain ranges confine between them a the Pan-American Highways and the long valley that starts from Quito and continues up to Cuenca. The name Avenue Of Volcanoes was coined by Alexander Van Humbolt in 1802. 9 of the highest volcano peaks of Ecuador are inclusive of the Avenue of Volcanoes. Ever since Edward Whymper, an Englishman explored several of these Ecuadorian Volcano peaks, the Avenue has become a major Ecuador sightseeing destination attracting thousands of tourists each year.
