The relationship that exists between Ecuador and one of its Political Neighbors, Columbia is important enough to demand special attention. The situations prevailing in Columbia significantly affects the political and economic conditions of Ecuador.
Relation between Columbia and Ecuador
Columbia has long been subjected to severe armed conflict that has its roots in the history of the country itself. Over the years, several attempts have been made to end these armed conflicts but in vein. Columbia has five bordering neighbor. Ecuador is one of them, with Columbia lying to the north of it. The continuation of long drawn armed struggles in Columbia have had spill over effects on Ecuador. Ecuador has been worried about the instability within Columbia from 2001 onward.
Effects of Columbian instability on Ecuador
As a result of the conflicts in Columbia, many fled from the country and took shelter in Ecuador. Further the “fumigation” of cocoa plantation along the border, destroyed many cocoa plantations within the Ecuadorian territory. Thus, the Government of United States requested Columbia to stop spraying along the border lines, for it made the Ecuadorians suffer from the shortage of food crops. In 2002, the failure of Columbian Peace talk further heightened the concern of Ecuador.
Even though important steps are being taken by the Government of Ecuador to ensure economic development and stability within the country, it cannot be denied that the situation prevailing over Columbia still affects Ecuador.
