Such personal desire of Simon Bolivar was greatly disliked by the President of Peru, Jose de la Mar. All these led to a war between Gran Columbia and Peru that started in 1828.De La Mar and Agustin Gamarra captured Cuenca in 1829. However, later, General Agustin Gamarra led a coup against Jose de la Mar. This ultimately paved the way for the signing of the Peace Treaty. This was followed by the signing of Piura Armistice on 10th July, 1829, which formally recognized Guayaquil being annexed by Gran Columbia. Finally, the war between Peru and Gran Columbia ended on 22nd September 1829. The year 1830 saw the collapse of Gran Columbia.
With the end of Gran Columbia, Ecuador emerged as an independent and separate country on 13th May, 1830.
