Ecuador South America has always aimed towards tackling international problems with a Multi-lateral and multi-national approach. Ecuador is a member of the United Nations. It is also a member of the Organizations of American states, Rio Group, Latin American Economic System, Latin American Integration Association, and the Andean Pact.
The Foreign Policy of Ecuador tries to achieve the following:
- Defense of its national territory from external aggression and internal insurgencies
- Support for United Nations objectives
- Working for and honoring the objectives of the Organization of American States
- Defense of its claim up to 370 km into the seas for fisheries, and territorial jurisdiction
Ecuador South America has offered humanitarian aid to many countries as a policy of Ecuador International Relations. Ecuador is currently is contributing troops to the UN Mission in Haiti. Ecuador has also served in the elective seats of the UN Security Council.
To establish international peace the Ecuador Foreign Policy has always been a guiding force. A long standing border dispute with Peru concerning an area around the River Cenepa in the Amazon area was settled in 1998. This dispute which lasted over 60 years was terminated with a treaty in 1998.
In January 1998, this treaty was signed between Ecuador and Peru in Rio de Janeiro brokered by the Four Guarantors of Rio Protocol (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and the United States of America).
Ecuador South America has also worked towards setting up a Sino – Ecuadorian Relationship. In January 1980, Ecuador and China entered into a bi-lateral political relationship. In July 1980, China set up its first embassy in Ecuador. Ecuador followed suit in July 1981 by setting up an embassy in China.
Ecuador South America also works towards prevention of drug trafficking and drug use. Colombia, and Peru the neighboring countries of Ecuador have organized illegal narcotics operations. Cocaine originating in these two countries uses Ecuador as their conduit.
Briefly put, the Ecuador South America has always strived to establish peace and harmony in the world in general, and in South America in particular.
