Fauna is the term which refers to the animal and bird species which are found in Ecuador. Ecuador has 18 recent of planet's bird and 8 percent of the world's animal species. The bio-diverse nature of Ecuador make such kind of growth of Fauna possible. Although Ecuador is a small country but it has more bird species than which are found in North America and Europe combined.
About 15 percent of world's endemic world species are found in Ecuador. Along with this around 1,550 species of mammals, 350 reptile species, 375 species of amphibians, 800 fresh water fish species, 3,800 species of vertebrates, and 450 salt water fish species have been identified in Ecuador. There are about million species of insects, which are found in Ecuador and also around 4,500 species of butterflies.
Fauna refers to the numerous species, which are found in Ecuador and, which makes this small country unique. Among the various birds, which are found there, some are – the harpy eagle, macaws, parrots, and the primitive hoatzin plus colorful tanagers. Some of the mammals found there include – sloths, river dolphins,ocelots, jaguars, anteaters, and several species of monkeys.
Fauna thus, contributes to the uniqueness of Ecuador and to the wildlife of Ecuador.
