The Dubai Government belongs to the federation of United Arab Emirates. United Arab Emirates is a Middle Eastern country in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula consisting of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Until 1971, the seven emirates were known as the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, due to a truce between Britain and some Arab Sheikhs in the 19 th century. UAE was also called Pirate Coast because of the emirates from 18 th to 20 th century. The constitution of Dubai government along with the entire country United Arab Emirates was drafted in 2 nd December and made permanent in 1971.
The premiership and presidency of Dubai is hereditary to the Al Maktoum clan and to the Al Nahyan clan of Abu Dhabi respectively. The leader of seven emirates consist the Supreme Council. These seven rulers elect the Council of Ministers. The proposed laws of UAE are reviewed by an appointed forty member Federal National Council. Unlike other five emirates, the government of Dubai along with Ras al-Khaimah does not follow the federal court system. However, the government of Dubai practices both Islamic and secular systems of law for criminal, civil and high courts. Dubai owns a veto power over critical matters of national importance in the UAE.
The emirate of Dubai government follows federal system of laws with some specified powers assigned only to the UAE.
