Recognized as one of the most advanced cities of the world, Dubai Metro is bestowed with the best possible infrastructure. Transports like the taxis, buses, abra had been enough to meet the needs of the people in Dubai but with the rise in population and influx of people from the world over the need for an alternative transport system was felt. This compelled the Government to re- think its transportation policies and plan for a Dubai metro.
Termed as the flagship project of the Roads and Transport Authority , the seeds of the idea of a Dubai metro was sown way back in 1997. The Dubai metro project worth 15.5 billion Dirhams is a milestone in terms of its state of art engineering and besides its social benefit it is also an architectural showpiece.
Dubai metro will be completed in mainly two phases. The Red Line will be constructed in the first phase of the Dubai metro project and will run on a Viaduct along the Sheikh Zayed Road and the Green line which will mostly be underground will constitute the second phase of the Dubai metro project. With a total of 70 Km lines Dubai metro will have 42 stations of which 9 will be underground. Begun under the directives of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the Dubai metro project is expected to be completed by the year 2010.
