Broumov is one of the major Czech Republic Religious sites. It is home to the Benedictine abbacy that functions under the jurisdiction of Benedictine Order of Brevnov, situated close to Prague. Originally, this gothic style church was dedicated in the honor of St.Adalbert. The monastery in Prague had been severely defaced and destructed during the Hussite wars and the monks, friers and priests took refuge in this very abbacy saving themselves from the dire consequences. In the communist regime the Broumov Benedictine abbacy was converted into a prison, and it was so till 1990.
The Benedictine abbacy in Broumov is adorned by frescoes depicting the life and times of St.Adalbert by Jan Jacob Steinfels. Fascinating sculptures by Vaclav Matej Jäckl and the paintings in the altar by Vaclav Vavrinec Reiner, and the works of Peter Brandl and Molitor are unique in themselves. At present the abbacy of Broumov is open for public viewing and showcases the Vamberec mummies of various monks belonging to the monastery and other famous personalities apart from the majestic organ player. The inlaid pieces of furniture and the refectory is worth a visit. The library of the Broumov abbacy holds a splendid collection of around 17,000 books, manuscripts and bibles.
