The renowned chess master of the early 20th century, Oldrich Duras was born in October 30, in 1882 at hamlet Humny of Pchery in Bohemia. He flourished as a leading chess player as well as a composer. During his early years Oldrich Duras served the Austrio - Hungarian army in the World War I. By this time the maestro has become a famous personality in the world of chess. Particating in top notch world premium tournaments, he had brought several honours to Czech Republic.
The Chess master Oldrich Duras became Czech Champion for three years in 1905, 1909 and 1911. Win in German Championship came in 1912. His notable games and wins include those against Vitacek in 1900, Teichmann in 1906, Spielmann in 1907, H Wolf in 1907, H Suechting in 1908, Duras vs Swiderski in 1908, E Cohn in 1911, Spielmann in 1912, Schlechter in 1910 and Marshall in 1912.
Th successful track record slowly came to an abrupt stop from 1918 onwards when Oldrich Duras himself gave up serious chess. On the basis of his splendid contribution Oldrich Duras was officially awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE. One of the most famous Czech people, Grandmaster Oldrich Duras died at Prague on January 5, in 1957.
