In his sixty five years of life,
Josef Gocar created waves in the art world of the Czech lands. A great cubist, his name is pronounced along with other famous Czech People.
Josef Gocar studied in the College of Applied Arts, Prague. There he came under the guidance of Jan Kotera – the greatest name in Czech modern architectural industry.
After working for a few years in the studio of Kotera, he started teaching in the Academy of Arts from the year 1924. He was associated with this institution till he breathed his last. Cubism is an art form using geometric patterns and Josef Gocar utilized this art in the construction of some magnificent buildings. Some of his early works are:
- Black Madonna in Old Prague in 1912
- The Spa complex in Bohdanec, East Bohemia
- Bauer Villa near Kolin
He showed his wizardry on furnitures also, designing his own flat and the residence of the famous actor Otto Boleska. Along with fellow cubist Pavel Janek he joined the Czech nationalist movement and developed 'Rondo Cubism' – a new style to celebrate the nation's independence. He was instrumental in the planning of the Hradec Kralove City in East Bohemia. He also designed the Czechoslovak Pavilion in 1925.
