The renowned painter, illustrator, stage designer and graphic designer, Jan Zrzavý, was born on November 5, 1890 at Okrouhlice in the present day Czech Republic. One of the most famous Czech people of the 20th century, Jan Zrzavý was honored as the National
Artist in 1965. Jan Zrzavý was a key member of the Czech chapter of the European
Modernism Movement and was influenced highly by European medieval art.
Jan Zrzavý was the founder of the art groups and clubs of Sursum and Tvrdosijni
(Stubborns), where the creative minds of the time frequently congregated and shared ideas. He himself was widely known for his inclination in landscape painting, spectacular scenery from his native land like the Prague, Vodnany and Okrouhlice landscape as well as those from the far-off lands of France, Italy and Greece found lively depiction in his paintings.
The 1950s and 1960s brought immense success to Jan Zrzavý who became recognized amidst the art connoisseurs of the time. The maestro became famous in the national as well as international arena and his major works include 'Valley of Sorrow' and 'Cleopatra'. The great painter was also a major representative of the 1920s avant-garde. He breathed his last on October 12, 1977 in Prague.
