A discussion on Czech Republic Religion could be very interesting as only 19 % of the Czechs believe in the existence of God. As per the census of 2001, 59 % of its denizens are atheists, agnostic, non believer or do not have a definite opinion if they believe in God or not. This percentage is highest in Czech Republic after Estonia in the whole of the European Union.
This tendency largely owes to the oppression of religion in the past and today the Czechs are proud to declare themselves as atheists. There is a dearth of priests and if there is one, he has to serve even far off places due to the constant scarcity. The law has no reservation and provides complete freedom of choice in religion.
The followers of religion or those who believe in God among the Czechs predominantly follow Christianity or Judaism. They belong to institutions like Baptist Union in the Czech Republic, Czechoslovak Hussite Church, Czech and Slovak Orthodox Church, Roman Catholicism in the Czech Republic, Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and Silesian Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession. Religion is in no way taught in government schools, though a number of privately funded religious schools exist in the arena of Czech Republic Religion.
