Elbe Sandstone Mountains

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains form the international border between the state of Czech Republic and the state of Saxony in the south-eastern Germany. This leads to the nomenclature of Bohemian Switzerland and Saxon Switzerland to the region belonging to the countries, respectively.

Extensive Geo - scientific research proves that the unique landscape of Elbe Sandstone Mountains date back to 90 million years in the Cretaceous period, and has been formed by massive erosion in the geological past. The Elbe river cuts through the mountain range made of soft sandstone and form narrow valleys between steep edges. Three strata of Quader sandstone, and eruptions of granite and basalt make up the mountain range. Rising to an elevation of approximately 723 meter, the entire region receives an annual rainfall of 700 - 900 mm.

The picturesque landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains offers 1,100 sandstone towers and around 15, 000 rock - climbing sites making it a perfect get away for the brave at heart. The entire region is covered by national parks that have an abundance of spruce, pine and beech trees. The steep mountain forms deep gorges, and wooded forest land making the region truly an Area of Outstanding Beauty or AONB.
